Each individual cell in this colorful oak leaf makes its own decisions about whether the green chlorophyll goes or stays and whether the red pigments should be produced.
Different tree species turn different colors in the fall. Some species turn only yellow while other species turn only red. Others, like red maple and sweetgum, turn a multitude of colors.
A diversity of colors indicates a diversity of species. The deep green color is from conifers such as pine and hemlock.
People from other regions travel to the eastern United States just to see this show of autumn color. It might be listed as one of the wonders of the world were it not so ephemeral.
